It’s disturbing to watch a generation lose its ability to think. Not because we don’t have access to information, but because the information we’re getting is shallow, diluted, and designed for instant consumption. Social media has become a breeding ground for headlines, memes, and short video reels. In this chaos, critical thought is drowned out.

We don’t read anymore, collectively speaking. Not books, not long-form articles, and certainly not the things that challenge our views or stretch our minds. Instead, we’ve traded substance for convenience, and in doing so, we’ve forfeited our capacity for deep, critical thought.

What we are left with is a generation of passive consumers, conditioned to scroll quickly, absorb snippets, and move on. We don’t sit with ideas long enough to wrestle with them, and it’s far too easy to ignore anything that requires true mental effort.

I understand. It’s effortless to scroll through a feed and click on headlines that fit your mood or reinforce what you already believe. We’re all busy. But this convenience is slowly eroding our ability to think for ourselves. If we keep down this path, we risk becoming a nation of sheep, blindly following social media influencers and corporate interests… entities that thrive on our inability to think critically.

We used to be a great nation; a nation of thinkers, writers, and builders. But when was the last time you picked up a novel, read a thought-provoking article, or explored a new idea in depth? Can you even name a journalist or historian who’s truly challenged the status quo lately? Most of us can’t. We’ve gotten too comfortable with quick, easy clickbait from people with big platforms but little-to-no substance.

This is what happens when we stop reading, stop thinking critically, and stop questioning. We lose our ability to reason. We begin buying into whatever the loudest voices on the Internet say, whether it’s viral trends, influencer generated garbage, or corporate-driven narratives. The truth is buried beneath all this noise, and yet we’re swallowing it whole… hook, line, and sinker.

If we don’t shift how we consume information, we’re heading for an intellectual collapse.

It’s time to stop treating memes as news. It’s time to question everything we read and make sure we’re not accepting false narratives. We need to embrace critical thinking no matter how inconvenient it is or how it challenges what we thought we knew. If we don’t, we will become a product of the very system that wants to keep us ignorant.

This isn’t a small issue. It’s a crisis of freedom. The moment we stop thinking for ourselves, we give away our autonomy. We become slaves to the opinions of the masses, led by those who profit from our distraction and compliance. Once that happens, it’s over. There’s no going back.

So, here’s my challenge. Start reading again. Not just the things that confirm your beliefs, but the ideas that make you uncomfortable. Read books. Read long-form journalism. Dive into content that forces you to think harder, deeper, and longer than a 15-second TikTok video ever will. Rediscover the power of critical thought.

Because if we don’t, we’re all screwed. And I’m not exaggerating. This is the tipping point.
